David Fincher's English adaptation of the bestselling novel was sold as a blockbuster for adults and primed for huge success when it released in December of 2011. Acting as the first part of a planned trilogy, adapting the book series that audiences just couldn't get enough of, directed by one of the most praised directors of his time, and starring James Bond? It was a surefire hit until it wasn't.

While the book tackled some disturbing topics, few expected Fincher to commit to those moments as much as he did. He allowed sequences like Lisbeth's rape to play out in full and it wound up being a bit more than most general audiences could take.

The film itself is a meticulously crafted murder-mystery with stellar cinematography and a standout, transformative performance from an unrecognizable Rooney Mara as Lisbeth. It also saw Fincher working with one of his biggest budgets to date and showing off some breathtaking action sequences.

Alas, the planned sequels never came to fruition following the first film's disappointing returns and this film is often remembered as a failed franchise starter.
