10 Most Underrated Movies Of The 2010s
3. Hugo
Scorcese's big-budgeted ode to the cinema of the past may have gotten some substantial Oscar buzz, but general audiences were never quite sure what to make of it.
Part of it came down to the fact that the film's central plot was shrouded in mystery, leaving the marketing little to work with other than the exciting 3D visuals and a strange looking metal boy that Huge was obsessed with. The other part was that even after the film was out, it isn't exactly like the average movie-goer knows a whole lot about George Méliès.
The film chronicles the adventures of a boy named Hugo as he discovers love and cinema simultaneously. It is an unexpectedly sincere and sentimental film from Scorsese, in which he probes his own love of cinema on the screen for all to see. The film's 3D is also of particular note, with even James Cameron citing this film as the best use of the technology, ever.
Thus, what should have been the modern equivalent of the 'cinema of attraction' was simply brushed off by the public, hardly able to recoup its losses. It isn't every day a filmmaker like Scorsese bares his childhood soul for all to see.
