10 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The Decade
2. Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
Widely considered the least of the Avengers movies, Age Of Ultron is one of the MCU's blacker sheep. Seemingly let down - at least somewhat - by a tense production that saw Joss Whedon very publicly leave his Marvel position reportedly exhausted, the film made Marvel a massive amount and is far from critically hated, but there's some disconnect between how it's talked about and its actual quality. Perhaps of the context of its release and some of the things that have come out about it subsequently, in terms of creative frictions.
Anyway, putting all of that aside, it's the founding stone for everything that came afterwards with the Superhero Registration plot, it introduced Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver - and had the balls to kill one of them off - and had a villain so delightfully gawdy and fun that he felt like an old superhero cartoon bad guy.
James Spader's performance is brilliant, but Robert Downey Jr's is also - for much different reasons - and this film mapped out huge character complexities that would be important later while also managing to tell a traditional Frankenstein-like sci-fi story on a huge scale. That deserves more credit.
