House on Haunted Hill from 1959 is widely regarded as a classic, which is a shame because, 40 years later, someone came along and did a rubbish remake.

The 1999 version of this story follows the same plot as the original; a group of strangers are challenged to spend one night in a supposedly ghost-infested house with one million dollars on the line if they make it. After some initial scepticism, it becomes clear that this dwelling has really earned its reputation.

Two of the victims of the house are Steven and Evelyn, played by Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen respectively. They get into a bit of a tiff (which is putting it lightly) and Evelyn gets shoved through a door where, on the other side, she meets The Darkness, the spirit at the centre of all this madness.

Only it's not an evil spirit, it's some bloke draped in tattered bedsheets.

The Darkness is not scary in the least. It looks like it's gotten itself tangled up in the Christmas lights. Considering its meant to be the evil mastermind at the centre of this night of terror, the crew really should have done better.
