I Am Legend's protagonist, Robert Neville, is a virologist who's trying to find a cure for a virus that caused 99.99% of the world's population to mutate into vampiric zombies called Darkseekers. Apart from his German shepherd, Sam, Robert has had no companionship for the last few years and so, sees his dog as his only true friend.

But after the Darkseekers lure Robert into a trap, he is chased by a bunch of infected dogs. Although Robert escapes, Sam is bitten during the attack. Robert brings Sam back to his lab and injects her with a serum, hoping to reverse, or at the very least, slow down the infection.

In a scene that is heartbreaking for any dog-lover to watch, Robert notices discolouration in Sam's eyes and gums, proving the infection has begun to grip her body. With little warning, Robert's once loyal mutt transforms, and instantly tries to take a bite out of her owner.

Even though we knew Sam was infected, nobody was ready when she turned, especially since she changed from a loving pet to a deranged beast in an instant.
