10 Most Unnecessarily Hated Characters In Film History
1. Ruth DeWitt Bukater - Titanic
The class status system so present in society over many centuries dictated everything about how people went about their daily lives. The importance of someone's name can't be understated, the ultimate decider of how affluent or not your life would be and which deck of a sinking ship you'd end up on.
Ruth DeWitt Bukater was most definitely aware of this when she organised for her daughter Rose to marry a wealthy individual of high status. Unlike her own husband who had left her in severe debt and without a penny to their name, the man Ruth had set her daughter up with was financially secure, if not the nicest man going around.
It is no wonder then that Ms Dukater was fuming when her daughter was belligerent and started making googly eyes at a peasant boy. It's all well and good for a 21st century arm chair critic to look down at her obsession with status, but when the society you live in is decided by this, then it is simply a game she had to play.
Ruth does let herself down with an ill timed comment while on a lifeboat about not having enough room, but considering how traumatic the situation must have been, it is not surprising that she wasn't at her finest. She may have been a snob obsessed with status and wealth, but considering the times she lived in, fair enough.
