10 Most Unnecessarily Hated Characters In Film History

5. Nurse Ratched - One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

A slightly different take on this loathed character compared to others on this list, as it is extremely hard to find anything likeable or remotely good about Nurse Ratched. Armed with a strict, take no nonsense and compassionless attitude, Ms Ratched comes across as a lady who clearly had inadequate training for her job.

This entry is actually quite a sad one, because as the film suggests, a character like Nurse Ratched would have been held in high regard. If anything her mannerisms and creation of a seemingly open but controlled atmosphere would have been seen as ahead of its time.

There's little doubt that Nurse Ratched gets far too much joy out of her intense control and manipulation of her patients actions, her inability to display genuine compassion is a weak character trait. But she is very much a product of her time, and being a lady in a position of authority, there was simply no chance for Nurse Ratched to be anything but a hard nosed leader, as nothing else would have been accepted.

Remarkably Nurse Ratched is ranked one of the biggest all time villains, the AFI ranking her at number 5. That is ten places higher than the titular Alien from that Sigourney Weaver lead franchise and Amon Goeth from Schindler's List, the most brutal Nazi seen on film. We know Ms Ratched has her flaws, but that is mighty harsh!

With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
