Despite being one of the most powerful Jedi of all time and one played by Samuel L. Jackson of all people, perhaps the most distinctive aspect of Mace Windu is his purple-bladed lightsaber.

Given that Jedi typically have green and blue sabers while the Sith have red sabers, it was similarly expected that Windu would have a green or blue lightsaber, as was the original plan during production.

But while shooting his scenes, Jackson approached George Lucas and insistently requested that his saber actually be coloured purple.

It's an odd request on the surface, though Jackson's faultless rationale was that the distinct colour would help him stand out during crowded action sequences.
