8. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
This 2006 sci-fi from Mamoru Hosoda is based on a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, who is perhaps best known for Paprika – a chilling psychological thriller, that was also made into an anime in the same year. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, however, is a far more light-hearted yarn, that won’t give you the nightmares of Paprika.
The film follows Yasutaka Tsutsui, who – as the title suggests – unexpectedly gains the ability to time travel. It’s a well-crafted tale, as all time-travel plots must be, that beautifully explores the pains of growing up, the pangs of teenage life, and what is and what isn’t a good excuse to leap through time…
