10 Most Viewed Movie Trailers In First 24 Hours Of Release
7. Mulan teaser – 175 Million Views
The original animated Mulan made $304 million worldwide, so you can understand why Disney was keen on pulling the trigger in remaking it. Walt Disney Studios gained a million more views than its other live-action remake, The Lion King, with Mulan’s official teaser in the first 24 hours of release, totalling 175 million views. 52 million of the 175 came from China alone.
Directed by Niki Caro, the film promised itself to be true to Asian traditions and culture, with many clicking to see exactly how Disney would adapt their 1998 animated fan-favourite. A hot topic given even before production began a "Tell Disney You Don't Want A Whitewashed Mulan!" petition was circulated online that received more than 100,000 signatures. The teaser revealed to the world Chinese actress Yifei Liu as warrior Mulan.
The teaser also drew some criticism from some for not featuring Mulan’s dragon sidekick Mushu, originally voiced by Eddie Murphy, and no musical numbers like I'll Make A Man Out of You. The teaser promised to be more faithful to the legend of Mulan than its predecessor. The beginning shows her being groomed for an arranged marriage, but towards the end Mulan is passionately waging war against a Hun invasion, showing her as the promising warrior she was born to be.
