10 Most Wanted Movie Sequels That Would Never Work
5. Beetlejuice 2
Speaking of once-great directors who have lost their touch in recent years, I present: Mr. Tim Burton. Beetlejuice was his second film (released in 1988), was loved by critics and audiences alike, and grossed $73 million from a budget of $15 million. Because of its success, an animated TV series was created, which ran from 1989 to 1992, and a sequel, titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, has been in the works for 23 years.
Kevin Smith was approached at one point to pen the script, but turned it down after brilliantly stating, "Didn't we say all we needed to say in the first Beetlejuice? Must we go tropical?" Kevin, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Word on the sequel resurfaced in 2012, and supposedly Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are willing to return, as long as the script is good enough. The tropical backdrop has been scrapped, though Smith's concerns are still valid. Yes, Beetlejuice was a great movie. But we don't need a follow-up, and there really ins't much more to say about the character. As with most of the films on this list, a sequel to the 25 year old property would amount to little more than a disrespectful cash-grab.
