10 Most WTF Opening Scenes From Recent Movies

9. The 2001: A Space Odyssey Parody - Barbie

The Flash Baby
Warner Bros.

Even though a trimmed-down version of it was freely shown off in Barbie's original teaser trailer, it's still an absolute, hilarious head-scratcher to open the movie proper with a glossy parody of the iconic Dawn of Man sequence from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The riotously weird, Helen Mirren-narrated "Dawn of Barbie" shows a group of young girls playing with generic baby dolls, until they're surprised by the literally monolithic presence of the first Barbie (Margot Robbie).

The doll's presence evidently prompts the girls to abandon their maternally-minded toys, smashing them to pieces and signalling the "evolution" of toys aimed at young girls.

Given that many assumed this scene had been created exclusively for Barbie's teaser trailer, to see an expanded version of it show up at the start of the movie itself was a pleasant surprise.

And if nothing else, it confirmed the film's gleefully anarchic, satirical spirit from the jump. One can only imagine what Kubrick would've made of it...
