7. Oppenheimer Poisons His Professor - Oppenheimer

The Flash Baby
Warner Bros.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is certainly packed with its fair share of surprising and unforgettable moments, such as Oppenheimer's (Cillian Murphy) unexpected mid-coital recitation of "I am become Death, destroyer of worlds," but perhaps the most shocking of the lot happens in the first few minutes.

The opening sequence reveals that while studying at Cambridge, a frustrated Oppenheimer poisoned an apple with potassium cyanide and left it for his demanding professor, Patrick Blackett (James D'Arcy).

However, a guilt-riddled Oppenheimer returns to retrieve it the next day, just barely snatching it from the hands of his idol physicist Niels Bohr (Kenneth Branagh) before he can take a bite.

It's a startling moment to come in the opening minutes of a biopic about a theoretical physicist, and in turn immediately tells us that Oppenheimer is a highly complicated individual.

Though there are conflicting accounts about how much of this incident, if any, ever actually happened, it's a wild dramatic moment with which to kick off perhaps the most anxiety-inducing biopic ever made.
