10 Movie Character Fates Only Explained In DVD Extras

7. Ed - Shaun Of The Dead

Shaun of the Dead Ed
Universal

The final twist in Edgar Wright's solid zombie apocalypse survival comedy? Revealing that hero Shaun's best buddy Ed had survived the final battle - sort of.

Shaun somehow managed to chain Ed up in their garden shed to keep him around as a gaming buddy, but just how did he manage this?

Ed's fate looked sealed after electing to stay back and hold off a horde of zombies to aid his best friend's escape. Doomed to succumb to his zombie inflicted wounds, Ed's self-sacrifice seemed like the last we would see of him. Until he turns up in the shed playing Timesplitters 2.

Fortunately, some rather awesome bonus features on the Shaun Of The Dead DVD are able to explain how this happened.

In Plotholes, Ed narrates a storyboard sequence revealing just how he was able to make it out of the pub. Hiding under the stairs to avoid the zombies and going unnoticed, Ed quietly passed away but was discovered by Shaun a week later bumbling around in the cellar. Only now as a fully-fledged zombie.

Shaun coaxed Ed to follow him through the night back to their old home, trapping him in the shed. After managing to chain Ed up, Ed recovered enough of his former personality to prevent himself from trying to eat Shaun all the time, providing something of a happy ending for the two best friends.

It would have been a stretch to fit all of this into the end of the film but at least it provides an answer to a fairly big question.
