6. Saruman - Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Shaun of the Dead Ed
New Line Cinema

Sir Christopher Lee was very upset when the Saruman actor found out his scenes had been removed from the final installment of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. So much so Lee even refused to attend the final film's premiere.

It was a pretty controversial decision. Saruman was a major antagonist throughout all of the books, and the first two film adaptations of the trilogy.

It seems to have never been the intention of the filmmakers to adapt Saruman's true death from the books into film. The Scouring Of The Shire was just too much to cram into an already overstuffed film.

But a death scene for the fallen wizard and his sniveling accomplice, Grima Wormtounge, was filmed.

In the extended edition of Return Of The King, Saruman is stabbed in the back after spilling the beans about Grima murdering King Theoden's son. The wizard falls to his death and is impaled on a spiked wheel at the base of his tower after Grima shanks him. Grima then meets his own demise via an arrow fired by Legolas, thus concluding both of the evil doers fates.

All in all, a fairly anti-climatic ending to one of the trilogy's biggest characters. But it was a whole lot better than just completely forgetting their existence and brushing Saurman under the carpet.
