10 Movie Character Fates Only Explained In DVD Extras
5. Deirdre - Ronin
Deirdre absconds during the finale in the 1998 thriller Ronin. The last we hear of her is when the main characters, Sam and Vincent, sit down for a chat in a little bistro in Paris. When the conversation turns to Deirdre, Vincent informs Sam that Deirdre will not be coming back.
This rather ominous final line leads the audience to believe Deirdre has been hunted down and eliminated. But was she dispatched by Vincent or her IRA colleagues?
Ronin's director John Frankenheimer had already shot his preferred ending where Deidre considers joining Sam and Vincent at the bistro. She decides to leave, but before she can get in her car and drive off a van pulls up. Some armed IRA men jump out and bundle a screaming Deidre into the back of the van.
"This is what we do to traitors" are the words of one of the IRA men, heavily implying Deidre meets her demise at the hands of her former compatriots.
This ending was scrapped after test audiences reacted negatively to it, so Frankenheimer altered the ending to merely imply Deirdre's death. The scene found itself on the DVD release of Ronin some months after its release, finally clearing up Deirdre's ultimate fate.
