When the Internet first heard the Saw franchise was to be rebooted once again, the reaction to the promise of this year’s Book of Saw: Spiral was about as enthusiastic as the calls for a Howard the Duck reboot in the next stage of the MCU. However when stand up hero Chris Rock announced he was a famous fan of the franchise and would be producing the new instalment excitement understandably peaked, and it hit fever pitch when none other than Samuel mother***ing Jackson was announced to star—alongside Rock himself!—in the reboot.
Last month saw the first trailer appear for the dark procedural thriller, and true to form for the franchise the film looks promisingly gritty, gruesome, and intense—here’s hoping it’s also as convoluted as ever. However, one detail did stand out to eagle eyed trailer viewers—Max Minghella’s rookie cop, paired with Chris Rock’s world-weary veteran on the force, proudly displaying a photo of his beloved wife and kids.
The moment was so egregiously signposted that it almost felt like one of the franchise’s signature traps, but we’re nonetheless calling it now—if that newbie cop with a cute kid and young wife actually makes it out of the movie alive, it’ll be a bigger miracle than a half-decent film coming from the Saw stable.
