This one seems even more inevitable than the potential demise of Captain Jack Sparrow for various reasons, chief amongst them the increased public pressure upon the producers of this Harry Potter spin-off franchise as well as the eventual in-universe demise of the character in question.
Much-maligned series creator and scourge of Twitter users JK Rowling has not addressed calls to remove Depp from the role of Grindlewald and the actor did appear in the sequel to 2015’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with his antagonist playing a central role in the prequel franchise to the boy wizard’s adventures. However, Grindlewald is long gone by the time the Harry Potter franchise starts, meaning it should be easy for Master of the Subtle Tasteful Retcon Rowling to pen the character’s demise in time to let Depp step out of the role during the next instalment.
It will depend on the actor’s decision, but given the fact that the franchise will last for at least five instalments it seems prudent to handle Depp’s departure earlier than later if the actor is, as rumoured, retiring from the screen in the foreseeable future.
