10 Movie Characters That Were Written Out In Dumb Ways

1. Newt and Hicks - Alien 3

James Cameron's Aliens introduced two important characters. The first was a little girl named Newt. The sole survivor of Hadley's Hope, she formed a bond with protagonist Ellen Ripley. In fact, their bond was so strong that Ripley faced her fears and fought the Alien threat alone.

The second character was Dwayne Hicks. A colonial marine, he led the survivors in their fight against the Xenomorphs. He even formed a mutual interest with Ripley. The three, along with Bishop, survived the nightmare and escaped LV-426.

But Alien 3 showed that fate had other plans for Newt and Hicks. As the filmmakers wanted to isolate Ripley once more, the decision was made to kill the two off. In the film's opening sequence, an electric fire caused their escape pods to fire off a nearby planet.

However, the resulting crash would kill everyone on board while Ripley conveniently survived. A support beam crushed Hicks' head while a crack in her pod caused Newt to drown. The theatrical cut of the film even went too far as it showed their mangled corpses.

Though it was done for narrative purposes, their deaths made the events of the previous film, all for nought. Hicks and Newt's fate set the harsh and unforgiving tone of Alien 3.
