10. Baby Groot Is Groot's Son - Guardians Of The Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy memorably concluded with Groot (Vin Diesel) sacrificing himself in order to save the Guardians, leading to him regrowing from a sapling as the adorable Baby Groot.

And while most fans understandably assumed that this was the very same Groot, last year James Gunn tweeted confirmation that the original Groot is indeed dead, and Baby Groot is his "son."

This entirely recontextualises Groot's initial sacrifice, of course, even if it raises a host of questions regarding the internal logic of Groot's physicality, like what can happen if you snap part of him off.

But rest assured, the Groot we're left with is not simply a regeneration of the original who will eventually remember his prior life as he matures into adulthood: this is an entirely new creature.

And if that's not devastating enough, Gunn also confirmed that Groot's final word to Rocket (Bradley Cooper) before turning to dust at the end of Infinity War was "dad."
