10 Movie Characters Who Fought Younger Versions Of Themselves

5. Sam Bell - Moon

Captain America v Captain America Endgame
Sony Pictures Classics

Lunar miner Sam's love of Chesney Hawkes's sole hit single becomes bitterly ironic when the plot of Moon reveals that he is far from The One And Only version of himself.

After crashing his lunar rover, the older Sam wakes up to find his younger self has rescued him and brought him back to the moon base. As they start to wonder whether either or both are clones, tensions mount between two versions of the same slightly irritating guy trapped in an isolated space with just his own bad habits.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't take long for these tensions to spill over into physical violence. The younger Sam interrupts the older while the latter is working on his model town and tries to take his craft knife from him.

The Winner:

Youth wins out this time, largely due to the nature of the cloning process.

After a brief scrap, younger Sam puts his older counterpart in a headlock until he gives in, with the older version bleeding profusely.

Unlike earlier examples on this list, this fight isn't the climax of the movie but rather the midpoint that leads to several reveals. For a start, neither Sam is the original, but both are clones of a real Sam from fifteen years earlier. The clones are designed with a shortened lifespan, so they die at the end of their three-year "contract". For the older Sam this is just a couple of weeks away, giving his younger self a distinct physical advantage in the fight.
