10 Movie Characters Who Had To Die To Win
6. Captain Miller (Laurence Fishbourne) - Event Horizon
Another entry and another space-based horror from a helmer who struggled to gain the trust of his studio. This time it’s 1997’s Event Horizon, the sole decent directorial effort from Phantom Thread director near-namesake and Resident Evil adapter Paul W.S Anderson (sorry, Alien Vs. Predator).
Straight-laced Captain Miller, played by Morpheus himself Laurence Fishburne, isn’t terribly well-equipped to deal with the hellish dimension-hopping sentient ghost-spaceship Event Horizon when he and his crew stumble across it—and to be fair, whom amongst us would be? Just reread that description.
So it’s commendable that he tries to pull his crew together and resist the siren’s call of personalised hallucinations provided by the demonic ship in order to lure crew members to their death. It’s also predictable that these attempts fail utterly, leaving Miller and a handful of survivors to blow the thing to bits—which requires one of them to stick around for the detonation.
At least Miller can rest easy for eternity knowing order has been restored thanks to his ship-shattering explosive plan coming to fruition.
