10 Movie Characters Who Knew When To Quit (But Didn't)

1. Captain Miller - Event Horizon

Now, we have to be completely fair to Event Horizon's Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) here: the guy certainly gave quitting - and quitting permanently - the ol' college try, but the odds just weren't working in his favour.

Miller leads his ship's crew in boarding the abandoned titular ship, and mid-way through the movie, the crew discover a horrifying video log of prior events on the ship, of the now-missing crew participating in a sexually violent orgy of-sorts.

Miller's brilliantly deadpan response? "We're leaving."

But evacuation isn't as simple as returning to their own ship, the Lewis and Clark, which is damaged and then eventually destroyed by a possessed Dr. Weir (Sam Neill).

Ultimately Miller ends up sacrificing himself in order to explosively split the Event Horizon in two, in turn allowing the three remaining crew members to survive.

You certainly had the right idea, Miller, to flee in the sight of a literal horror-show, but fumbled the follow-through - albeit while going out like a damn hero.
