10 Movie Characters Who Knew When To Quit (But Didn't)
3. Goodnight Robicheaux - The Magnificent Seven (2016)
In Antoine Fuqua's 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven, one of the titular seven is Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), a former Confederate marksman afflicted by crushing PTSD.
But when moustache-twirling gold tycoon Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) plots to take control of frontier town Rose Creek by force, Robicheaux decides to dip the night before, his prior wartime experiences having eroded his spirit and making him fearful of getting involved in any further violence.
Predictably, though, Robicheaux eventually returns to join the battle at a pivotal moment, warning his comrades of Bogue's plan to unleash a Gatling gun on the town.
And though Hawke's character provides invaluable cover during the battle, he ends up paying the mortal price for it, being turned into Swiss cheese by the aforementioned Gatling gun.
Robicheaux's gut told him to get the hell out of there, but he couldn't bring himself to leave his six teammates - and an entire town's worth of innocent civilians - to their fates.
