10 Movie Characters Who Sacrificed Their Lives Unnecessarily
3. Qui-Gon Jinn - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
The way in which Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi dealt with Darth Maul was inexplicable from the start of their defining encounter with the Sith warrior. When the doors opened to reveal that Maul was waiting for them, the Jedi had the backup of Captain Panaka and his security team - all of whom had projectile weaponry on them. Had they all opened fire on the Sith at the same time, he would have been powerless to block them all. That said, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon insisted on handling Maul themselves in a lightsaber duel, and the rest is history. In spite of the fact that Qui-Gon had already been bested in battle by Maul in a previous encounter, he opted to fight one-on-one with his opponent when Obi-Wan was distanced from the fight. Then, when the trio were separated by a series of automatic door-like energy shields, Qui-Gon again chose to advance forward with the fight, leaving Obi-Wan behind. Had the Jedi requested the help of Captain Panaka's team to begin with, they wouldn't have needed to have the fight in the first place, but, given that the fight did happen, Qui-Gon's rash decision lost him his life when he didn't need to.
