4. Robert Neville - I Am Legend

In the official ending of I Am Legend (there was, of course, a much better alternate), Robert Neville killed himself - along with a room full of Darkseekers - using a grenade, having handed over a vial of blood containing the cure for the Darkseekers' condition to fellow survivor Anna and told her to seek shelter in a coal chute at the back of the room. Along with Ethan, the young boy who had been accompanying her on her journey, Anna survived in the chute as Neville charged at the alpha male Darkseeker, going on to make the cure known to others. Prior to his sacrifice, Anna had told Neville that there was plenty of room in the coal chute in order for him to join her and Ethan in there - so why didn't he just throw the grenade at the Darkseekers prior to quickly closing the door of the chute and protecting all three of them? Essentially, Neville could quite easily have duplicated the exact outcome of his kamikaze move without actually losing his own life.
