10 Movie Characters Who Should Never Have Died
3. Dick Halloran - The Shining
Introduced as one of the few genuinely caring and likeable characters in the entire film, the stage is set for Dick Halloran to be The Shining's true hero. Dick is the Overlook Hotel's head chef and helps young Danny Torrence understand their shared ability to shine, as well as the building's way of leaking through evil memories from the past.
Whilst he does leave the hotel for the winter season along with all the other workers, the film regularly cuts to shots of Dick in contact with Danny and then making his way back across the country to the hotel just as things start to get choppy.
The scene is set for this true hero to come through and save the day, however almost as soon as he steps foot back in the Overlook, he is stabbed in stomach by Jack. Dick drops to the floor and that's it for Scatman Crothers' character for the rest of the film, just like that. Whether it was through staying away from the hotel all together, or sweeping in with the heroic entrance he deserved, there was no way Dick Halloran should have died in the way he did.
