10 Movie Characters Who Were Only There To Die

3. Vanessa - Deadpool 2

"Fridging" is the trope of writers killing off a female character to provide storyline drive for a male one.

It is extremely widespread in comic books - Gwen Stacy, Alexandra DeWitt, Moira MacTaggert etc. This goes for comic book movies too and one of the most egregious recent examples of this comes in 2018's Deadpool 2.

If you haven't seen the first Deadpool film, then it's basically all about the titular anti-hero trying to return to his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). After much trial and tribulation, the lovers are reunited and settle into their new life together.

Until Vanessa gets killed right at the beginning of the sequel.

After spending almost two hours of our time trying to get her back, Wade Wilson loses his beloved about ten minutes into his second outing. Vanessa was killed off just to give Deadpool's character an extra edge; an ignoble end for a character that had so much more to offer.

Women often get a bad time in comic book media and the casual discarding of Vanessa's character is no exception. This blatant disregard for her turned a lot of people off Deadpool 2 and the franchise itself.
