10 Movie Characters Who Were Only There To Die

2. Uncle Ben - Spider-Man

Death is very rarely permanent in superhero media. Even Vanessa came back to life (but we're still mad, alright?)

There are a few deaths so fundamental to comic book lore that they can never be undone. One is the demise of Bruce Wayne's parents and another is the murder of Peter Parker's Uncle Ben.

The rice namesake didn't even make it to the end of his first comic book, as he was killed by a petty criminal in 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15. Since then, he's made the jump to the big screen in both Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man.

Yes, the guy who directed The Amazing Spider-Man really was called Webb.

We're focussing on the Raimi films though as Webb's version of events was a retreading of established ground. Cliff Robertson's version of the character is a stern yet caring father figure who clearly loves Peter. His death at the hands of Flint Marko sets in motion the events of the following three movies.

Uncle Ben was literally just there to die, because he is one of if not the most important doomed characters in all of popular modern fiction. Now that's a great responsibility.
