10 Movie Characters Whose Fates Were Left Frustratingly Unresolved
4. Cobb - Inception
Containing perhaps one of the most famous movie endings of the last decade, Inception blew everyone away when it was released back in 2010. Groundbreaking visual effects, a stellar cast and a mind-bending narrative, Inception has been hailed as one of the best movies in recent memory.
The audience is constantly reminded just how important totems are to characters when it comes to distinguishing a dream world from reality. DiCaprio's Cobb is constantly haunted by visions of his deceased wife, and his reliance on his totem is almost like an addiction.
His whole motivation in taking this final job is so he can return home to see his children. Before seeing them, he spins his totem to see if this is really real. If it topples, he is in the real world. Distracted by his children playing outside, Cobb goes to greet them, whilst the totem still spins. And then we cut to black.
It's kind of like a giant F-U from Christopher Nolan to the audience. Cobb doesn't care anymore whether he's in a dream or not, because it's so indistinguishable to him. So why should you care? Well Chris, we do okay. We can't help it and we're just not as smart as you are.
Of course, it's occurred to many that Cobb will eventually return to that kitchen. He will see that totem and know for sure whether it's real or not. But we won't. It makes no difference to Cobb, so it shouldn't make a difference to the audience. Nevertheless, we're a nosy bunch and we just have to know.
