10 Movie Characters Whose Fates Were Left Frustratingly Unresolved

3. The Driver - Drive

Midsommar Florence Pugh

Is Drive one of the coolest movies ever made? Yes. Does the ending leave it extremely open ended? Yes.

Drive is many things. It's a crime film, it's a thriller and it's a romance. It's also stylish as hell. Ryan Gosling's unnamed protagonist is very reserved, quiet but clearly troubled, apparent when he bursts into acts of extreme violence. See the scene in the lift for more details.

The Driver's motivation is to protect Irene and her son, and this comes to a head at the end of the movie in a meeting with crime boss Bernie Rose (played brilliantly against type by Albert Brooks). To put it in short, The Driver kills him but is also stabbed in the gut himself. It then cuts to a shot of him motionless in his car, holding his bloodied stomach. The shot seems to linger FOREVER before he starts his car and drives off.

Now he's bleeding profusely, driving off into the night whilst Bernie probably has an army of cronies looking for him. Things aren't looking too well for him and the only hope is that he makes it to a hospital of some sort. We will never know if The Driver just died at the wheel of his car after loosing five pints of blood or not.
