From the likes of Justice League to Spider-Man 2, it's not uncommon for superhero movies to draw upon religious symbolism to reinforce the status of the hero in question as a god-like, saviour figure.

While some of these depictions can be a little too much-on-the-nose some more subtle deployments of this motif can be a lot more effective. But, in the case of James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy, the imagery went straight over the heads of many viewers.

However, seeing as the Easter Egg only makes sense in relation to a deleted image Gunn posted on his social media we can't blame you for missing it. The image in question depicted the eponymous superheroes sitting at a table in a tableau resembling The Last Supper, with Groot (Vin Diesel) in the place of Jesus. One fan quipped that Groot - being made of wood - would be able to be his own crucifix, to which Gunn replied he wasn't far off.

In the highly-emotional scene where Groot protects his team from dying in a ship crash, he holds out his arms in a familiar position prior to sacrificing himself to save his teammates.

Groot really is the true hero of that film.
