6. Coraline - Family Portraits

For a family film, critically-acclaimed stop-motion animation Coraline is pretty terrifying.

Revolving around the eponymous girl (Dakota Fanning) who discovers a hidden doorway in her new home that leads to another world full of button-eyed doppelgangers, the film contains plenty of ghoulish imagery as she uncovers the true intention of the The Other Mother. Planning to sew buttons on her eyes in order to trap her soul, Coraline only learns the truth when she encounters a group of three ghostly children.

This is the first time we meet the children in the ghostly flesh as we learn that Coraline wasn't the first victim of the nightmarish creature However, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a clue to the children's existence much earlier in the film during the scene where Coraline first enters the other world.

In the scene in question, Coraline is presented with an appetising cake as her button-eyed other parents persuade her to stay in their world. Look closely at the background and you'll spot three silhouette portraits hanging on the wall that depict each of the three children.

A sneaky piece of foreshadowing hidden in plain sight, the significance of this tiny detail will likely have been missed by many first-time viewers.
