Taking home two of its 11 Oscar nominations, Todd Philips' gritty take on the clown prince of crime has taken the world by storm, once again showing how mature comic book movies can be.

Although it's a separate story from the multitude of other Batman films we've seen over the years, Joker still pays tribute to the films that came before as well as other incarnations of the comic book villain. One of which being incredibly subtle.

In the run-down apartment Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) shares with his mum (Francis Conroy), you might be able to make out a picture of a boy dressed in blue hanging next to the television if you were able to take your eyes off of Phoenix's phenomenal performance. This isn't just a random piece of set dressing; this is Thomas Gainsborough's The Boy In Blue, and it connects this incarnation of Joker to the one portrayed by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's own version of Batman.

During the beloved museum scene from Burton's film in which we see Nicholson's Joker have the time of his life destroying precious artwork, we can see him walk past the aforementioned picture.

Spotting this Easter Egg is sure to leave you smiling.
