10 Movie Endings That Are Secretly Depressing
5. Mulan 2
Plot:
Mulan and Shang get engaged. Before being wed, they are sent, along with their three friends from the army, to protect three princesses who need to have a strategic marriage for political reasons. The princesses (who are sheltered and had escorts in the palace) fall in love with the soldiers. Mulan supports them in their whirlwind romance, despite the fact that their marriages to princes are necessary for the safety of their country.
Mulan ends up trying to give herself up in marriage in their place. She thinks Shang is dead, she wants her friends to be happy, and knows that a union between kingdoms needs to happen. Shang returns, stops the wedding, and he and Mulan marry.
But Wait...
About that politically necessary union. It never happens. This movie tells us that if there isn't a marriage between kingdoms in 3 days the mongols will destroy China. The princesses ditched their duty and decided to stay with the soldiers they'd just met.
Mulan’s marriage to Shang in no way binds the two kingdoms together. Looks like everyone is going to be slaughtered at the end of the movie.
