10 Movie Endings That Leave More Questions Than Answers
7. Mulholland Drive
At the end of David Lynch's film, critics and audiences alike questioned everything they saw.
The film's plot seems simple. A young woman who suffers amnesia following a car crash. Mix that in with multiple timelines and strange imagery then you'll be left with a beautiful yet confusing cinematic mess.
The ending of Mulholland Drive sees Diane (played by Naomi Watts) hiring a hitman to kill her lover Camilla (played by Laura Elena Harring) and ends up taking her own life after experiencing hallucinations induced by guilt and grief. It's a strange, cryptic, bizarre and very David Lynch ending to the film.
The director himself left the movie's ending up to the viewers' interpretation. Some have debated if the story was meant to depict how it feels to try and make it big in Hollywood, following an almost impossible dream.
But the abrupt ending leaves viewers with multiple questions. Why did the real Camilla kiss the dream version of Camilla? What was the meaning behind the Cowboy? Is Aunt Ruth dead? If so, how could Betty communicate with her? Who gives the key? What actually happens in Mulholland Drive?
