10 Movie Endings That Leave More Questions Than Answers
6. Donnie Darko
You aren't alone if you walked out of the cinema asking every question under the sun about what happened in this film.
Donnie Darko follows Jake Gyllenhaal's Donald "Donnie" Darko, a troubled teen who struggles with sleepwalking and constantly hears a mysterious voice leading him during these episodes. One night, Donnie sleepwalks outside where he sees a strange rabbit who tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds.
Donnie wakes up on a golf course that morning, learning that a jet engine has crashed into his bedroom. During the film's climax, after Donnie realised that the prophecy of the world ending was only hours away, he returns home one night as a vortex forms over his bedroom, ripping off a plane's jet engine, which disappears through time.
Events of the previous 28 days unwind with Donnie waking up in his room just before the plane's jet engine crashes into his room and kills him.
The film's ending bewildered many fans as questions started to arise asking what caused the vortex? Where did the first jet engine come from? Is it a Groundhog Day situation? Did Donnie have to die at the end? Was the consequence of Donnie surviving at the start the reason the world was ending in the first place?
Many theories have developed over the years, but fans have never been given a straight answer to what really happened at the end.
