10 Movie Endings That Were Profoundly Insulting

Alexandre Aja's High Tension is a tightly-wound, supremely violent horror film for about 90% of its runtime...and then it delivers an ending that not only unfurls the gnarly ride, but retroactively makes the rest of the movie worse.

The bulk of the film is focused on two best friends, Marie (Cécile de France) and Alex (Maïwenn), who are pursued by a brutal serial killer, and between the stomach-churning death scenes and unnerving atmosphere, Aja seems well on his way to deliver a low-key cult classic.

But then he stumbles at the final hurdle, hurling out a wildly unnecessary, logic-derailing twist, that Marie is actually the real killer, being murderously deranged and in love with Alex, while the imposing stalker antagonist witnessed throughout the film is merely a fabrication in Marie's mind.

This instantly breaks the logic of countless scenes we've witnessed, namely a car chase now rendered impossible, and even if you argue that we're witnessing Marie's jumbled mental account of what happened, it's still a massive stretch to make sense of it all.

Clearly, Aja struggled to come up with a satisfying ending, but rather than simply go to the well-trod horror movie well, he decided to pull a total WTF out of nowhere.

It was bold, sure, but an insanely stupid conclusion to an otherwise great movie, and bad enough that it's doubtless sworn many off from ever watching it again.
