6. Tim Burton Fanboys
What They Think: "Repetitive gothic visuals and Helena Bonham Carter are all you need to make a great film." There's no point arguing that Tim Burton isn't a talented director, because he obviously is; the likes of Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands are dazzling artistic spectacles with superb acting and emotionally engaging narratives. However, in recent years, Burton has demonstrated nothing but a patent lack of imagination (Frankenweenie excluded); his gothic aesthetic has become wildly overused, causing it to feel like the director is just running on fumes and churning these films out. When watching a Tim Burton film, you pretty much know what you're getting; monochromatic visuals, a Danny Elfman soundtrack, a supporting performance from Helena Bonham Carter, and a quirky protagonist who is either dead or some sort of weirdo. The annoyance is that no matter how awful a Burton film is, the fans will blindly like pretty much anything, fawning over his style while completely ignoring how dramatically inert many of his recent films (Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows especially) are.
