10 Movie Franchises That (Almost) Destroyed Their Star

4. Fantastic Four - Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba memorably played Sue Storm aka The Invisible Woman in the 2000s' two Fantastic Four movies, and the actress' clash with director Tim Story on the 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, almost caused her to quit the movie business entirely.

Alba recalled that while filming an emotional scene, Story asked her to "cry pretty," prompting her to reconsider whether she really wanted to work in such a superficial industry.

She said, "The director was like, 'It looks too real. It looks too painful. Can you be prettier when you cry?' He was like, 'Don't do that thing with your face. Just make it flat. We can CGI the tears in.' And I'm like, But there's no connection to a human being. And then it got me thinking: Am I not good enough? Are my instincts and my emotions not good enough? Do people hate them so much that they don't want me to be a person? Am I not allowed to be a person in my work? And so I just said, 'F**k it. I don't care about this business anymore.'"

Alba ultimately didn't quit acting, though in recent years her career has certainly been more on the low-key side while raising her three children.
