10 Movie Franchises That Died In 2016

8. Nicholas Sparks Movies

The Franchise: Christian romance author Nicholas Sparks basically has his own cinematic universe, what with 11 of his novels having been adapted into sappy dramas over the last two decades.

Best known for the weepie hit The Notebook, Sparks' other, less tolerable creations include Dear John, The Last Song and The Lucky One.

How It Died: Though Sparks' first 8 movies effortlessly made their budgets back many times over, the wheels seemed to come off the enterprise in 2014, when The Best of Me bombed, and his two adaptations that followed, The Longest Ride and this year's The Choice, were similarly unsuccessful.

Sparks subsequently closed down his movie production company, and 2017 will mark the first year since 2011 that one of his novels doesn't get an adaptation.

While it's entirely possible that Sparks may churn out more movies in the future at a lower budget and possibly even straight-to-video, it's clear that the A-list, big-budget Hollywood equivalent is dead, as even the soccer mom market has become bored with Sparks' treacly romances and unintentionally hilarious plot twists.
