The Franchise: 2014's animated film The Nut Job grossed an impressive $120.8 million worldwide, almost tripling its budget and resulting in a sequel being greenlit less than a week after the movie was released.

The Nut Job 2 was released in August, by which point a third film had already been confirmed, with Open Road Films clearly confident that the sequel would repeat its predecessor's success, if not exceed it.

What Happened?: In addition to scoring even worse reviews than the first film (9% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original's 11%), The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature grossed less than half of the original, making just $58.6 million worldwide.

Though Open Road has been quiet on the planned threequel ever since, it's clear that the series has hit a brick wall with its sudden recent commercial failure.

It's possible that the animated franchise could continue in straight-to-video form, but that would require most of the A-list cast to be replaced with soundalikes, so in practically every way that counts, this franchise few actually asked for has been mercifully put down.
