Like many classic horror franchises, 1974's legendary Texas Chain Saw Massacre spawned a heap of less-than-stellar sequels in the two decades that followed, with each one making considerably less than the one before it. That lack of interest eventually forced studios to quit flogging the dead series.

The franchise, however, was rebooted in 2003 when Platinum Dunes produced a remake of the original. Receiving a more mixed response from critics, it was undoubtedly an improvement over the previous three films - a fact that was backed up by its impressive gross of $107 million. However, a much less-successful sequel resulted in Platinum Dunes cancelling a third film, bringing an end to their rebooted series.

Seven years later, the franchise received another jolt of life with Texas Chainsaw 3D - a direct sequel to the original that ignored everything in between and featured the return of original stars Gunnar Hansen and Marilyn Burns.

Though it was moderately successful, Lionsgate then opted to reboot the series with a Leatherface prequel instead. Unfortunately for them, the project's release delay resulted in them losing the rights to Legendary Pictures, who now plan to (wait for it) reboot the franchise once more with a new film and TV series.

There's life in Leatherface yet.
