10 Movie Franchises We Never Want To See Rebooted Again
6. Jack Ryan
While the Amazon series starring John Krasinski has turned out to be a favorite among dads everywhere, after two cinematic busts in a row Jack Ryan is probably best served remaining on the small screen, because there just doesn't seem to be a place for him on the big screen anymore.
The Hunt for Red October was a critical and commercial success, and Ryan's feature debut is regarded by many as his best outing. The character had franchise potential written all over him, and despite original star Alec Baldwin failing to reprise the role, Harrison Ford was a more than suitable replacement.
Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger were the kind of mid-budget, hugely enjoyable, well-made 90s blockbusters with some intelligence about them that nobody really seems to make anymore, but after Ford eventually walked away from the part, Ryan was rebooted with Ben Affleck as the star at the height of his early-2000s popularity.
The Sum of All Fears wasn't terrible, but it didn't perform well enough to warrant a follow-up, sending Jack Ryan back into development hell before Kenneth Branagh's Shadow Recruit arrived 12 years later, becoming the lowest-earning and worst-reviewed Jack Ryan movie yet.
In an era characterized by Bourne, Bond and Mission: Impossible, Jack Ryan feels like a relic of a forgotten time, and is probably best served remaining on television where there's less competition in the espionage genre and more time to develop stories that people can invest in, because he's already been rebooted enough.
