10 Movie Franchises We Never Want To See Rebooted Again
4. Alien
Ridley Scott's original and James Cameron's follow-up are two of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, but ever since then the Alien franchise hasn't given us much reason to justify why it still exists over 40 years later.
The third and fourth installments certainly have their fans, but didn't come anywhere close to achieving the level of acclaim that greeted the first two, despite taking some creative risks and expanding the mythology. It seemed like the series had reached a natural conclusion, but the Xenomorphs proved far too popular to be left alone.
The Alien vs. Predator movies botched the crossover fans had been waiting decades for, before Sir Ridley opted to return and take the franchise down the prequel route, throwing Neill Blompkamp's proposed Aliens sequel in the trash in the process.
Prometheus made over $400m worldwide but failed to fully develop any of the lofty ideas that often had it bordering on the self-indulgent, while Covenant ultimately fell back into formula and finished on a standard humans vs. Xenos battle, and it seemed as though interest was on the wane as it earned $160m less at the box office than its predecessor.
We've had sequels, prequels and crossovers, but we still haven't had an Alien movie that can be regarded as truly must-see since 1986. Last we heard, Scott was still intent on finishing his prequel trilogy, but perhaps Disney's acquisition of Fox will finally put the skids on running the iconic extra-terrestrials into the ground.
