10 Movie Franchises Which Got Terribly Adapted TWICE
1. Charlie's Angels
Turning hit 1970s TV series Charlie's Angels into its own blockbuster movie franchise just made all the sense in the world, and with the well-cast trio of Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore, it seemed like it couldn't miss.
And in fairness, the original 2000 film was at least a box office hit, even if it painted inside woefully generic genre lines and the overeager male gaze of director McG's camerawork sullied the whole affair somewhat.
Sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is basically more of the same but louder, dumber, and even less coherent, causing it to gross less than its predecessor on a much larger budget, effectively bringing the series to an end.
In 2019, a new Charlie's Angels was released which, while technically existing within the same continuity as both the original TV series and previous films, was for all intents and purposes a soft reboot, starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
And this thing is just dripping with cynicism from start to finish - a low-effort attempt to make Charlie's Angels relevant again, minus the charm, smart storytelling, or even basically fun action necessary to make it happen. Hell, Stewart even admitted earlier this year that she hated making it.
To the surprise of few, the reboot was a colossal box office bomb, ensuring any prospect of a sequel was immediately swept off the table.
