7. The Avengers Franchise

You can't talk about crossovers without talking about the four Avengers films, which have been the most successful modern blockbusters of all time. Of course, we know it all started with 2008's Iron Man. A solid flick in its own right, but a seed was planted at the end setting up Nick Fury and the Avenger Initiative.

From there, the rest is history. Year after year, Marvel and eventually Disney have put out countless big-budget productions each covering some of the most iconic names in the comic book industry. After a five year build-up, the series came to a head in 2012 with The Avengers. As the highest grossing film of that year, it set just about every major studio on the path to crafting their own wider franchises.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to get bigger and bigger; there was no stopping its rapid rise. Thanks to the carefully crated stories and connections, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame put the series on the top of the movie industry.

What the MCU did was take the idea of a film franchise to the next level. This was a continuous, multi-layered effort that spanned an exorbitant amount of stories, character and settings. Its success has never been matched to this day.
