5. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
When the Marvel Cinematic Universe power-bombed the film industry, their biggest competitor was the first to enter the ring. Hot off the success of The Dark Knight trilogy, the DC Extended Universe was out to challenge their rival with another major verses entry.
When Man Of Steel rebooted Superman in 2013, fans and critics alike were split down the middle. Had Zack Snyder just reinvigorated the character or had he completely missed the point of the iconic hero? Three years on and we were treated to the franchise's continuation with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The two titans of the comic book scene had never met on the silver screen before, but right from the start the project felt rushed. The final product ended up being a few decent highlights sandwiched between a whole load of underdeveloped and muddled story threads. At least four or five films were rolled into one at the behest of Warner Bros.
Chasing down Marvel for the box office bucks, DC's bid to turbocharge their own cinematic universe was mostly a large mess. It was a desperate attempt at playing catch-up, leaping to the grand ensemble production without having laid the groundwork first. BVS set the DC Extended Universe on a downward trajectory fairly early on and more recent efforts have abandoned the interconnected plan entirely.
