10 Movie Franchises With Epic Crossover Events

4. The Monster Squad

Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman
TriStar Pictures

One of the biggest fixtures of 1980s cinema was the coming of age story. Films that starred a very young cast navigating the trials of tribulations of teenage life recieved massive popularity. It's the kind of formula that modern shows like Stranger Things firmly embrace.

One release from 1987 melded this style with a horror movie mash-up. The Monster Squad brought together Frankenstein, the Wolfman, Dracula, the Gill Man and The Mummy in a wacky, over-the-top adventure. It features a band of kids as the stars as they use their knowledge of classical monster movies to take on the creatures.

With its tongue firmly in its cheek, the film takes full advantage of the jokes and japes of the time. Many quotable lines found their way into the script as the leading characters look to save the world from the rampaging horror icons.

The Monster Squad didn't do so well when it first came out. It was the tail end of the eighties and its brand of teenage crossover was starting to go out of style. Yet it has gone on to become a big cult favourite. With very strict ownership rights over horror movie monsters, you'd never see a film like it coming out today.
