There are different levels of villains on this list, and even up against the likes of the Joker, Se7en's John Doe is one of the most intelligent, brutal, and merciless. It's that first trait that his entire plan rested on however, as he needed to evade the police until his masterpiece was complete.

Said horrific masterpiece was to show what a deplorable place the world had become by illustrating the seven deadly sins through seven murders. After the first five - gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, and pride - the killer's attention turns to Detective Mills.

John Doe himself was to represent envy, jealous of the life Mills had with his wife. So, as you do, he decapitates her, and in one of the most famous movie scenes ever, presents her head to Mills in a box.

All together now: "What's in the box?!"

Understandably, this sends Mills into a fit of anger and he murders John Doe, thus representing wrath.

So while John Doe loses in a sense, that was always the plan. Even when Somerset tells Mills that he's about to do exactly what the villain wants, he can't stop himself. And in fairness, could anyone?
